MARCUS
" My Father taught me to dive "

Marcus in the Arctic: 1992

My father made his first dives in 1944 as a combat swimmer in the Italian Navy during WWII.
Today he is 81 years old and teaches his grandchildren how to dive.

In 1956 in Algeria, when I saw the film The Silent World and watched it six more times, I knew what I wanted to do. Technically, I became a certified diver in 1958 in Corsica.
The souvenir I keep since then is ear problems.
Nevertheless, I had my first experiences under water when I was 2 ½ years; I used to jump into my father's arm's while he was diving in the pool.
I leap into the water, sink like a rock and play in the bubbles until my father spoils the pleasure by returning me to the surface.
In 1974 I became an instructor and dive professionally.
Since then, I dive practically every day.
In total, i have about 15.000 dives.
I dive because I feel and know that water is MY element.

Under water, my senses are hypersensitive:
- I can anticipate the fish
- I find a the smallest animals within large surroundings
- I can feel fish approaching from behind me
- I drink the water through my regulator to taste it
- I dive without gloves to feel the water and if I can i dive without suit as well to have the contact with water all over my skin.
- I fly. I film, so I can share my love of the sea with someone who did not sea the beauty of it first hand yet.
The camera is an extension of my senses, I speak in images about my love with the oceans, I use the water to dance and fly around its actors.
When I see the film, the same emotions when I took the images come back to me, even years later.
I film moments under water.
I prefer to leave the words to others and just let the images to do the talking.
